The album that refills itself
Messaging apps save what you receive into your photo library. WhatsApp creates a WhatsApp album, Telegram creates its own, and the same is true for Signal, Messenger, Viber, LINE and WeChat. It happens quietly, it happens for group chats as much as for friends, and it is the reason a library grows even when you have not taken a photo in weeks.
The contents are predictable: memes, forwarded videos, screenshots of conversations, delivery confirmations, and photos of things people wanted you to see once. Very little of it is worth its storage, and none of it is worth the backup bandwidth it consumes.
Chat media is the clearest example of a pile where the decision is easy and the volume is high, which makes it one of the fastest wins in any cleanup session.
How TidyByte finds chat media
Messengers save into ordinary albums, so the albums themselves are the signal. TidyByte recognises the albums created by WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Telegram, Signal, Messenger, Viber, LINE and WeChat, and pre-selects them. You can also add any other album, which covers apps with unusual names and media saved by hand into a folder of your own.
- Confirm which albums count as chat media. The selection is remembered, so you set it once.
- Review the list with sizes and dates, sorted by size or by date.
- Deselect anything you want to keep before deleting: a shared video, a photo of a document, a picture of someone you love. Tapping a selected item takes it out of the deletion, and the rest go in one pass.
- Delete the rest in one pass. One iOS confirmation, 30 days in Recently Deleted.
What is deleted, exactly
Only the copy in your photo library. The chat app keeps its own copy in its private storage, so conversations are unaffected. To clear that side too, use the storage settings inside the chat app itself.
Clear the backlog, then stop the refill
Cleaning is only half the fix. Chat apps keep saving by default, so the album will be full again in a few months unless you change the setting in each app. It takes a minute per messenger and it is the difference between a one-off cleanup and a permanent change.
- Turn off auto-save in each messenger's settings, so new media stays in the chat instead of the library.
- Clear the chat app's own storage periodically, which is where the copy inside the app lives.
- Run a chat media review every few months, since forwards still arrive and you may choose to save some deliberately.
- Watch the duplicates too: the same image often arrives from two people and lands in your library twice. The duplicate cleaner handles that.
Between the setting and a quarterly pass, chat media stops being a silent storage leak and becomes a category you control.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find photos WhatsApp saved to my iPhone?
WhatsApp and other messengers save received media into albums in your photo library, usually named after the app. TidyByte recognises the albums created by WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Telegram, Signal, Messenger, Viber, LINE and WeChat, and you can add any other album. It then lists that media with sizes so you can review and clear it.
Does deleting these photos remove them from the chat?
No, and that is worth understanding. TidyByte deletes the copy in your photo library, which is what counts against your storage and syncs to iCloud. The chat app keeps its own copy in its private storage, which you clear inside that app. Removing the library copy is safe and does not break the conversation.
How much space does chat media take up?
It varies enormously, because group chats share videos. It is common to find several gigabytes of saved images and video clips in chat albums, most of them memes, forwarded clips and screenshots of conversations that nobody has looked at since the day they arrived.
Will clearing chat media delete anything I sent?
It removes the library copies of what the app saved, including media you sent if auto-save was enabled for both directions. Because deletion goes through the standard iOS confirmation and lands in Recently Deleted for 30 days, anything you actually need can be restored afterwards.
Why not just disable auto-save in the chat app?
You should, and it is the right long-term fix. It does not help with the years of media already saved, though, which is why a cleanup pass and the setting work best together: clear the backlog once, then stop the refill.
